Cash ISAs

Download our free ISA Mini Guide here

The current allowance for this class of cash savings account is £3,600 per tax year. Interest is paid free of income tax. The term "mini-ISA" has been dropped now following the slight amendments to the rules in 2008/9.

TESSAs and TOISAs

The forerunner of the cash ISA was the TESSA (Tax Exempt Special Savings Account). These were five year accounts, with the oldest schemes due to end April 2004.

At the end of their term, the capital element (but not any interest element) from TESSAs could be rolled-over into a cash ISA ("Tessa-only ISA"). This is in addition to the normal cash ISA allowance for the tax year. TESSAs and TOISAs are now just termed Cash ISAs.
